Gan Siow Huang on electricity costs for residents and businesses on Pulau Ubin
Annual electricity demand from Pulau Ubin is small and it is not cost-effective to connect the island to the mainland grid. A micro-grid serves more than half of the island’s residential and business consumers, located at the main village, who pay a rate lower than the cost of using their own diesel generators. Minister of State for Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang said this in parliament on Friday (Sep 26) in answer to an MP’s questions. She said the authorities are reviewing the possibility of newer technologies to lower costs and in the meantime, islanders can seek financial assistance if they need it.
