Gan Thiam Poh on supporting Singaporeans in starting and raising families
Cost remains the biggest factor keeping Singaporeans from having children, said MP Gan Thiam Poh in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5). He suggested that the Government provide “all-round economic support at all stages of a child’s development”. This would include higher childcare subsidies, higher housing subsidies for couples under a certain age to encourage them to marry early, allowing couples to “exchange” their flats to bigger units when they have at least three babies by topping up the difference in price and without having to fulfil a minimum occupation period, building subsidised confinement care facilities for parents and babies in new estates, and providing subsidies for grandparents to babysit their grandchildren.
