Gerald Giam on Civil Defence Shelter and Fire Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
In parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8), MP Gerald Giam welcomed proposed updates to fire safety regulations, adding that there is “a valuable opportunity” to refine how the robust new mechanisms are operationalised on the ground. He suggested that when fire safety concerns in HDB units are flagged, the Singapore Civil Defence Force should directly engage offending occupiers rather than going through the town council, for faster compliance and expeditious resolution. He also called for enforcement to be guided by objective risk assessments of genuine hazards, as it is not uncommon for complaints to be “weaponised” as part of neighbour disputes.
