He Ting Ru on Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill

The Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill is symbolic of the government's increased focus on tackling vaporisers, said MP He Ting Ru. Speaking in parliament on Friday (Mar 6), she stressed the need to ensure that enforcement efforts will provide users the opportunity to turn over a new leaf, as vaping is prevalent mainly amongst children and teens. She urged the government to be cautious about being overly punitive, adding that the focus has to be on giving them the support to change. Ms He also hopes the government could strengthen mental health support interventions. She also urged the government to pay close attention to another health risk - smoking. It should explore ways to use tobacco duties to tackle smoking and move decisively to impose a smoking cohort ban, she said.
