India protests: Police briefly detain opposition lawmakers during march in New Delhi

04:55 Min

Barricades and security personnel in the Indian capital New Delhi as opposition leaders and supporters attempted to march on the election commission, demanding the resignation of its chief. As opposition parties marched from Parliament towards the Commission headquarters, police blocked their path with barriers. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was detained, along with his sister, Priyanka but they were released shortly after. It's the latest in a series of demonstrations that began last week involving opposition parties, student groups and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party. The protests follow months of controversy over commission chief Gyanesh Kumar's alleged manipulation of electoral rolls, during a nationwide move to revise the lists. The opposition alleges the revisions favour the prime minister and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The Election Commission, Indian government and the BJP have denied any wrongdoing. Neha Poonia reports from New Delhi.
