Indranee Rajah on election of Seah Kian Peng as Speaker
The 15th Parliament will have to make laws, debate policy and make decisions that will chart the future of Singapore, said Leader of the House Indranee Rajah. It is over this parliament that re-elected Speaker Seah Kian Peng will preside over, she told the House on Friday (Sep 5). Ms Indranee noted that the 15th Parliament is Singapore’s largest parliament to date, with 99 elected members - 87 from the ruling party and 12 from the opposition, of whom two are NCMPs. She said she is confident that Mr Seah will preside over the proceedings with fairness and even-handedness, as he had done in the previous term of government. Ms Indranee highlighted his efforts to make the proceedings more accessible to the public so that parliament remains the preserve of the people, as well as upcoming initiatives to encourage Singaporeans to take an interest in parliament. As Speaker, Mr Seah never lost sight of the role of MPs, said Ms Indranee. She urged Members to remember to bear the weight of their office with dignity and a constant sense of duty.
