Indranee Rajah on government support to address cost of living

05:33 Min

The government has said that it will keep up cost-of-living support for as long as it is needed, but what are the factors that determine this, given that inflation has moderated but anxieties remain high? In response to this question from an MP, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Finance Indranee Rajah said the government takes into consideration not just inflation but also economic and labour market conditions, fiscal sustainability and affordability challenges faced by lower- and middle-income households. It also looks at target groups based on demographics and sometimes social purpose. Where anxieties are not supported by data, she said, the answer would be to address what is causing those anxieties or concerns. Ms Indranee spoke in parliament on Thursday (Sep 25).
