Indranee Rajah on recognition of service to Parliament by Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam and NMPs
It was the end of the term in Parliament for the current cohort of NMPs as well as Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s last sitting day in the House on Thursday (Jul 6). Leader of the House Indranee Rajah rose to speak in recognition of their service. She said the NMPs had walked an “amazing journey” with the House through the COVID-19 pandemic and with life mostly back to normal two years on, it was a state of affairs they had helped to achieve by their participation in Parliament. She noted that they covered several important milestones during their tenure, including measures to tackle the pandemic and position Singapore for the future, support to households to cope with the rising cost of living, Singapore’s Green Plan, the repeal of Section 377A and support for the GST Bill. She said they had championed causes they cared deeply about, presented their views passionately and contributed constructively to robust debates in the House. Turning to Mr Tharman, Ms Indranee said he had served as a Member of Parliament for more than two decades since 2001. She listed many significant contributions he had made in that time through his different ministerial appointments, including Education Minister, Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies and most recently, Senior Minister. Ms Indranee said he would be missed in the chamber for his “commanding presence and his erudite speeches”, his “greatest gift … in making very complex economic principles sound simple”, as well as his wit and dry humour. She placed on record Parliament’s appreciation to the NMPs and SM Tharman for their contributions to the House and service to the nation. *Audio issues inherent from source
