Jackson Lam on Scams (Countermeasures) and Other Matters Bill

09:25 Min

Proposed new anti-scam measures will allow Singapore authorities to go beyond targeting individual scammers and disrupt the wider infrastructure that enables scams. The implementation of stronger powers should be guided by three principles - speed in stopping scams, safeguards for innocent users, and accountability from government and service providers. MP Jackson Lam made these points in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8). Among his suggestions - a fast review process for genuine cases where suspected scam-linked accounts have been wrongly disabled, and tracking outcomes to determine the accuracy of the system. Also, a statutory review of automated anti-scam directions and Civilian Specialist Officers after a few years to assess if they remain proportionate and effective as scam tactics evolve.
