Jamus Lim in debate on securing Singaporeans’ jobs and livelihoods, and foreign talent policy

Singapore needs “clear-eyed evaluations” of the benefits and costs of its free trade agreements, including CECA, MP Jamus Lim told Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 14). He said while CECA is, on the face of it, like any other FTA, it carries its own set of idiosyncrasies. For instance, India is much larger than Singapore and at a far earlier stage of development. Assoc Prof Lim said Singapore must be wary of suffering its own version of “the China shock” to the global economy which resulted from China’s economic rise. He called on the Government to institute a “freedom of information” initiative, guaranteeing the full release of trade, production and labour market data pertaining to the study of FTAs for public scrutiny.
