Janet Ang on Singapore’s COVID-19 response

19:34 Min

The business community is glad to see that Singapore did not waste a crisis and that the Government chose to professionally and honestly reflect and learn from the events and the actions taken, including the U-turns that had to be made along the way, said NMP Janet Ang. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 20), she said Singapore has done well in protecting both lives and livelihoods. Consistently, the business community has brought up the Jobs Support Scheme as a “lifesaver” for many companies, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises, she said. What is before us is not yet clear skies, in the face of rapid inflation, supply shocks and energy hikes, she said. Ms Ang said Singapore can rise above these troubles if it stands together, like it did during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said it is crucial for the Government to continue to work closely with industry stakeholders to develop targeted measures. She wanted to know how helpful the setting up of SGUnited Jobs and Skills Centres in HDB towns has been. She also wanted to know how the Government plans to correct some of the structural employment misalignment in Singapore’s industries.
