Janil Puthucheary on food allergies in children
The National University Hospital and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital plan to carry out a study to determine the current prevalence of food allergies in children. A 2017 study showed the overall prevalence in Singapore was one to three per cent in young children, “generally lower” than reported in other jurisdictions. Inter-agency efforts are in place to increase awareness on how to better prevent and manage food allergies. For example, raising awareness among food handlers on food allergen risks, training primary school and preschool teachers on the emergency treatment of children with severe allergic reactions, and developing more resources to educate the public on managing and living with food allergies. Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary spoke on this in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15). He was replying to an MP’s questions.
