Janil Puthucheary on keeping residential healthcare facilities COVID-safe

Between Apr 1 and Sep 30 this year, there were around 330 reported cases from COVID-19 clusters in hospitals. Over the same period, around 3,000 COVID-19 cases were reported by nursing homes. They make up a "small proportion", or less than one per cent of total reported community cases, said Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary. Replying to an MP's questions in Parliament on Monday (Nov 7), he said as Singapore moves towards living with COVID-19, it no longer adopts a zero-COVID posture. But it will continue to take precautions to protect patients and residents and is ready to step up measures when necessary. Stressing that vaccination is the primary defence, he said Singapore has provided COVID-19 jabs to more than 90 per cent of eligible nursing home residents. This has kept the overall case fatality rate at about 0.1 per cent, well below the global average of around one per cent, he said.
