04:44 Min

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has survived a parliamentary vote to stay on as premier, after lawmakers convened in a special Diet session -- the first since last month's snap polls. This, despite a major setback in the recent national election, where his governing coalition suffered the worst election loss in more than a decade. Mr Ishiba was elected after two rounds of voting, after no candidate won a majority in the first round. Mr Ishiba, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party, won 221 votes. Mr Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, secured 160. Michiyo Ishida reports.
