Jasmin Lau on economic, social and cultural status slope ranking of PISA

Based on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, Singapore has a steeper slope representing the association between the socioeconomic status (SES) background and performance of students. While students from lower SES homes performed better than their Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) counterparts with similar SES, those from higher SES homes outperformed their peers by an even larger margin. This differential gives rise to the steeper slope. Minister of State for Education Jasmin Lau, who explained this in reply to parliamentary questions on Wednesday (Apr 8), said the Ministry of Education is committed to uplifting students who need more help without capping the potential of those who can excel.
