Jasmin Lau on proper use of NRIC numbers

03:31 Min

Government agencies are changing their practices on the use of NRIC numbers in two ways. Firstly, where there is no need to accurately identify someone, most agencies have stopped using the NRIC number completely. Secondly, where individuals must be identified accurately, agencies are starting to use the full NRIC number instead. For the private sector, the government will consult the public before making any changes and will ensure that it balances protecting personal data and meeting legitimate business needs. Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Jasmin Lau highlighted this in reply to an MP’s question in parliament on Tuesday (Feb 3).
