Joan Pereira on Retirement and Re-employment (Amendment) Bill and Central Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill

Older workers in low-paying jobs need more protection to ensure that they are treated fairly upon re-employment. Making the point in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 2), MP Joan Pereira said those who need the income may have little room for negotiation and those who are less educated may not be aware of their rights. She suggested making it mandatory for companies to hold regular townhall meetings and have clear whistleblower protocols so that employees can share feedback and be assured that action will be taken. Ms Pereira also expressed concern about a proposed change to treat top-ups to CPF members’ Retirement or Special accounts as non-refundable gifts. She said this could deter some children from topping up their parents’ accounts.
