Lee Hui Ying on Criminal Law (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

08:53 Min

Mandating caning for scammers may improve deterrence and disrupt scam networks, but to be completely rid of scams, the kingpins have to be targeted, said MP Lee Hui Ying. She asked what steps Singapore is taking on this front, as well as what plans the government has to implement more robust industry safeguards, disrupt syndicates’ communication channels and bolster cross-border collaboration to combat the transnational nature of scams. She said Singapore must respond more quickly to new modes of scams and close the gap between detection and public education. Ms Lee also addressed the exclusion of caning penalties based on age. She suggested raising the maximum age from 50 to 60, in view of Singapore’s ageing society and lengthening health spans. She spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Nov 4).
