Leong Mun Wai sums up debate on growing Singapore’s hawker culture

16:42 Min

The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) is ready to support an amended motion on growing Singapore’s hawker culture, which NCMP Leong Mun Wai said is “not too different” from the original motion tabled by him. “This is to show that this House is united in our support for hawkers,” he said at the end of the debate on the motion in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 13). The original motion by PSP called on the Government to “review its policies relating to hawkers and the management of hawker centres to provide better support for hawkers to sustain and grow Singapore's hawker culture so that Singaporeans can continue to enjoy good and affordable hawker food”. Speaker Seah Kian Peng proceeded to deal with the amendments proposed by MP Edward Chia, which were then approved by the House. The amended motion read: “That this House calls on the Government to continue its support for hawkers by regularly reviewing its policies relating to hawkers and the management of hawker centres, which will help to sustain and grow Singapore’s hawker culture so that Singaporeans can continue to enjoy good and affordable hawker food while enabling hawkers to earn a fair livelihood.”
