Leong Mun Wai on supporting healthcare

16:21 Min

Healthcare spending has more than doubled over the past two decades and it is not sustainable for Singaporeans to continue footing much of their healthcare bills, as well as those of their parents and children, said NCMP Leong Mun Wai. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (May 9), he urged the Government to do more to reduce social inequality, help Singaporeans cope with rising healthcare costs and strengthen their financial security. Mr Leong said financial pressures from the high cost of living are a major cause of poor health, including the growing problem of mental illnesses. He said if more is done to improve the affordability and equity of the healthcare system, Singapore can expect an improvement in the general health of its people. This should be one of the national priorities for healthcare beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.
