Louis Ng on Central Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill

04:59 Min

A Bill moved for second reading in Parliament on Monday (Oct 14) proposes to expand coverage of the Home Protection Scheme (HPS) to CPF members with less severe pre-existing medical conditions. MP Louis Ng noted that there is already a provision for members who “are not in good health” to apply to join the HPS. He wanted to know how many such members there are and how the proposed amendment will impact them. With up to 1.8 per cent of HPS applications not approved due to serious pre-existing conditions, Mr Ng asked what proportion of these members are expected to benefit from the changes and whether they will be notified that they can reapply. He also asked if there will be “an exhaustive list” of serious pre-existing conditions for exclusion. Mr Ng also had questions about the impending closure of the CPF Special Account for members aged 55 and above.
