According to a survey of 12,000 respondents in six regional cities, most people in Southeast Asia believe that Singapore’s strict laws, including the death penalty, are effective in deterring crime and drug trafficking. Still, Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam warned that the regional drug situation is worsening. He called for ASEAN’s anti-drug commitment to be established at the United Nations and also proposed a regional event to highlight the devastating impact of drugs. Singapore is also pushing for an ASEAN Drug Victims Remembrance Day every Jun 26, which is also the International Day Against Drug Abuse. Aslam Shah reports.
