Mariam Jaafar on Retirement and Re-employment (Amendment) Bill and Central Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill

Allowing businesses flexibility in offering re-employment contracts is important, but re-employed workers must also be protected and treated fairly, said MP Mariam Jaafar in Parliament on Monday (Nov 1). She gave the example of a long-serving worker who, after being re-employed, found that the new contract reset the clock on retrenchment benefits. Ms Mariam also asked about proposed changes relating to the disbursement of unnominated CPF monies to a beneficiary representative. She wanted to know what recourse next-of-kin would have, if they did not agree with the appointment of the beneficiary representative or how that representative chose to disburse the monies. She also asked what efforts are made to contact and facilitate disbursement to family members overseas, especially in light of continuing COVID-19 travel restrictions.
