Masagos Zulkifli on Administration of Muslim Law (Amendment) Bill
Ensuring that statutory Muslim institutions keep up with the times to provide better service, by updating their administrative processes - that is the aim of changes laid out in a Bill debated in Parliament on Monday (Feb 14). These include adopting digital processes at the Syariah Court and Registry of Muslim Marriages, such as permanently allowing the use of video link for marriage solemnisations. The amendments also enable MUIS to exercise powers to collect fees for carrying out functions like Halal certification. Finally, the Bill would extend support to Muslim families on par with what is provided to non-Muslim families under the recently amended Women’s Charter, in particular to protect children during the divorce process. The details were outlined by Social and Family Development Minister and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli.
