Melvin Yong on Building a Healthier SG
Employers must do more to tackle chronic illnesses caused by work. They can design the work environment to prevent chronic illnesses from forming; provide structured health screenings at the workplace, targeting job-specific chronic illnesses; and offer healthier eating options at the workplace. These suggestions were made by MP Melvin Yong in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5) during the debate on the White Paper on Healthier SG. He said gig workers must also be provided the benefits of health screenings and vaccinations, and urged all employers to give workers some sick leave without the need for medical certificates. Mr Yong also called on the Government to prioritise the rollout of preventive mental healthcare for the next review of Healthier SG, and consider improving access to support by raising the psychiatrist-to-population ratio to 10 per 100,000 residents, similar to countries like the United States and Australia.
