Melvin Yong on Health Sciences Authority (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill
Bringing more healthcare regulatory functions under the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) should result in not just a bigger regulator, but a better one, said MP Melvin Yong. He urged clarity for consumers and said an integrated regulator should be better positioned to not just resolve individual complaints, but connect the dots where needed to identify and address larger problems. He called for the Ministry of Health and HSA to track tangible outcomes such as time taken for complaint resolution, enforcement action and licensing turnaround. They should also monitor whether consolidation leads to a reduction in regulatory burden for healthcare institutions and professionals, and streamlining of processes. Mr Yong spoke in parliament on Wednesday (Sep 9).
