Motion: Gerald Giam on an economy of the future that works for all
The Economic Strategy Review report rightly acknowledges that essential physical trades are vital to Singapore's economic resilience, but its recommendations continue to rely on incremental tweaks within employer-led models, said Workers’ Party MP Gerald Giam. He proposed establishing a new autonomous entity called the Guild of Skilled Tradespersons. It would define skills standards and empower tradespersons to advocate for fair commercial rates, govern their own professions and scale their operations. This will ultimately change how society views this form of blue-collar work, said Mr Giam. In parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5), he also called for streamlining the local talent pipeline. Tradespersons must now complete two years of practical experience covering the entire spectrum of work before they can be licensed. Mr Giam suggested a modular pathway that verifies competencies task by task.
