Motion: Kenneth Poon on government response to political salaries review
NMP Kenneth Poon said he welcomes a proposal to explore the inclusion of a robust quality of life measure in the national bonus framework. The national bonus is part of the variable component of ministers’ pay. It is currently linked to four national indicators - unemployment rate, real income growth at the median and 20th percentile, and real GDP growth. Prof Poon said this is a chance for Singapore to consider a broader framework of social progress. In parliament on Thursday (Sep 10), he suggested four dimensions for consideration. Do Singaporeans have enough to meet their essential needs? Can they obtain essential services when they need them? Do Singaporeans feel they belong? Do they feel their lives are going well?
