Motion: Mariam Jaafar on government response to political salaries review
MP Mariam Jaafar expressed support for the new political salaries framework, emphasising that a benchmark is a reference point, not an entitlement. She noted that the prime minister has opted for a “restrained approach” of a one-off adjustment of up to nine per cent for political office holders. Welcoming the wider salary ranges under the revised framework, she said this allows recognition of the responsibility a person takes on when appointed to office, before their performance determines how far they progress. She added that while entering politics should not feel like winning the lottery, the financial structure should not exclude Singaporeans who come from sectors with lower salaries. Ms Mariam called for greater clarity on how the performance of individual ministers will be assessed, asking if there is a “robust structure” for this. She spoke in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10).
