Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on tackling concert ticket scams

08:52 Min

A total of S$518,000 has been lost to concert ticket scams this year as at Jul 10. This compares with S$175,000 for the whole of last year and S$84,000 in 2018, with the amounts being significantly lower during the COVID-19 pandemic. The figures were given in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 2) by Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim in reply to an MP’s question. Dr Faishal said the police work with social media and e-commerce platforms to take down scam advertisements for concert tickets and accounts involved in scams as soon as they are detected. They also work on pre-emptive detection and blocking of scam accounts. To raise awareness of concert ticket scams, the police have partnered ticket retailers, concert organisers and online platforms to issue advisories to the public. For example, SingPost displayed such advisories in its outlets when people were queuing to buy concert tickets. Ticket buyers are also urged to purchase only from authorised sellers and legitimate resellers such as Ticketmaster and, where possible, arrange to meet sellers in person to verify authenticity.
