Nadia Ahmad Samdin on State Lands Protection Bill
With much stiffer penalties being proposed for encroaching on and damaging state land, MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin asked the Singapore Land Authority to provide an anonymised breakdown of the profile of offenders, who she said number about 180 each year. Ms Nadia said this could help determine whether the increased penalties are proportional as a deterrent. She cited examples of seniors encroaching on state land by growing vegetables, setting up small religious altars or sleeping rough; as well as residents of private landed estates who inadvertently encroach on state land when they perceive the land to be abandoned. Ms Nadia also asked what measures will be taken to prevent trespassing or scams under the pretext of land inspections, since no warrants or criminal proceedings will be required for such actions. She spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 30).
