New Delhi wakes to toxic smog amid Diwali festivities

03:05 Min

New Delhi woke up to toxic smog a day after Diwali, India's largest Hindu festival. Many residents complained of difficulty breathing, scratchy throats and coughs, as people flouted regulations on the use of firecrackers during celebrations. Firecrackers have been banned in New Delhi since 2020, but in a surprise move last week, India's top court allowed "green crackers" designed to emit 20% to 30% less pollutants. While firecrackers were allowed for one hour in the morning and two hours at night on Monday, residents across the city were seen violating the regulation. Priyata Brajabasi reports from New Delhi.
