Patrick Tay on Info-communications Media Development Authority (Amendment) Bill
Under a new bill, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) must give prior approval before any party acquires a 30 per cent or larger stake in a regulated media company. MP Patrick Tay asked that the IMDA assessment framework formally incorporate workforce impact alongside market competition impact. He noted that major consolidation in the infocomm and media sector often comes with restructuring and role rationalisation, affecting many professionals, managers and executives (PMEs). He asked if the government would consider putting in place a formal tripartite platform for the sector, so that such workforce issues can be addressed early and systematically. He spoke in parliament on Wednesday (May 6).
