Poh Li San on Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
Under new laws, holding a mobile phone while driving will be an offence, but not using such a device if it is mounted - even if a person is watching dramas while driving, noted MP Poh Li San. She said instead of curtailing distracting activities, this may legitimise the blatant use of mounted devices. In parliament on Tuesday (Aug 4), she also said it may be difficult to catch drivers holding their phones. So, instead of stricter penalties, authorities should work to instil awareness by reinforcing the ‘no mobile devices’ message in children’s road safety courses, as well as for learner drivers and in driving tests. Drivers should also be encouraged to use voice activation to operate their phones, she said.
