Rahayu Mahzam on regulating social media access for children and youths
The Ministry of Digital Development and Information will continue to study the effectiveness of mandating age limits for social media access to protect children and youths from its harms, said Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Rahayu Mahzam in response to an MP's questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 7). Some considerations include how authorities will assess the extent of violations and where the line will be drawn if younger users turn to accessing unregulated platforms or services. Ms Rahayu said that the ministry is engaging its counterparts in Australia as well as social media platforms to understand their views. She added that the ministry has also taken several steps to protect children on social media, one of which is the Code of Practice for Online Safety, introduced in 2023.
