ROOTS: A Greening Journey
2023 marks 60 years since Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew planted a tree that seeded a nation-wide planting campaign. This documentary examines forgotten chapters in this greening story. From a grandfather revisiting a former plantation that was once his playground, to a historian tracking down a long-lost garden – The film follows characters whose journeys invite audiences to reflect on how the country has balanced development with greening over the years.
It also documents an expedition by a team of horticulturists who search Latin America for new trees with interesting features and abilities to weather climate change. Their mission to source new plants to grace the upcoming Founder’s Memorial, mirrors previous visits to the region by Singapore’s greening pioneers during the nation’s quest to become a Garden City. By retracing the past, these characters unearth lessons that inspire them as they chart the course for the next phase of Singapore’s greening journey.
