Shahira Abdullah on Women’s Charter (Amendment) Bill
Safeguards are still in place to ensure that divorce does not become too easy despite amendments in a Bill being debated in Parliament, said NMP Shahira Abdullah on Monday (Jan 10). Instead, the changes aim to avoid dragging out the divorce process and spare children from trauma. With that in mind, Dr Shahira welcomed the introduction of support programmes for children of divorces and expanding such schemes to more parties who could potentially be affected, adding that community and religious organisations could also play their part. She hoped the changes would be extended to Muslim marriages, under the Administration of Muslim Law Act and not the Women’s Charter.
