Shawn Huang on PMET hiring demand and job mismatches
Hiring demand for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) remains higher than the number of PMET retrenchments, and many in-demand PMET jobs are in finance and infocomm, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Manpower Shawn Huang. He was answering an MP’s question on whether his ministry plans to study the profile of PMETs who have been retrenched and the types of jobs the market is looking for, to improve job-matching efforts. Mr Huang added that mismatches in the labour market may be driven by shifts in skill requirements - for example, as firms expand technology functions while restructuring roles that have become easier to automate. He spoke in parliament on Wednesday (Apr 8).
