Sim Ann and Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on tackling hoarding and fire hazards in HDB flats
The issues of hoarding and fire hazards in HDB flats were addressed in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12) after a recent spate of fires in HDB homes, some of them fatal. Senior Minister of State for National Development Sim Ann detailed the inter-agency approach towards addressing hoarding, and the types of enforcement action taken when public health and safety risks are identified. She said that in the first half of 2022, 210 cases were dealt with and are being actively monitored to prevent recurrence. Another 260 complex cases remain unresolved. Ms Sim said work will be stepped up to tackle egregious cases, declutter corridors in HDB blocks and expand public education. Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim said the number of fires in HDB estates continues to fall annually and the fire fatality rate remains low. He also spoke about safety requirements under the Fire Code and the take-up rate for a scheme offering free installation of fire alarms in public rental flats. Assoc Prof Faishal and Ms Sim were responding to MPs’ questions.
