Sim Ann and Vivian Balakrishnan on ASEAN’s engagement with Myanmar
ASEAN has taken a firm and consistent approach to the situation in Myanmar, which is reflected in the “Five-Point Consensus”, said Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sim Ann. Replying to an MP’s question in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 7), she pointed out that there has been little progress in the implementation of the “Five-Point Consensus”, with the situation in Myanmar “more dire of late”. Ms Sim said Singapore will continue to work with fellow ASEAN member states and external partners to ensure that the “Five-Point Consensus” is implemented swiftly and fully. Replying to a supplementary question, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said the key word is “consistency". He said the situation in Myanmar is complex and ASEAN will continue to maintain its consistent position. He also stressed the need to continue humanitarian support as the priority remains the welfare of the people.
