05:37 Min

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has vowed to increase defence spending, after his first face-to-face meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington. Seoul will play a more active role, including boosting overall defence capabilities in response to changes in the regional landscape. Still, there are questions over how much South Korea will contribute to the cost of providing for 28,500 American troops stationed in the country. Meanwhile, both sides have agreed to a non-binding framework that details how South Korea will structure and operate a US$350-billion investment fund, which was agreed to with the US as part of a deal to cut tariffs.
