South Korea's Lee Jae Myung to meet Japan PM Shigeru Ishiba as both sides look to boost ties

02:24 Min

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is set to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during his trip to Japan tomorrow. Mr Lee is known for his criticism of Japan's colonisation of South Korea from 1910 to 1945, especially on issues surrounding forced labour and comfort women. During the previous administrations of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, both countries put aside wartime tensions to advance bilateral relations. But there are concerns among political watchers that the improvement in ties might be reversed under Mr Lee, who took office in June. Michiyo Ishida reports.
