Sun Xueling on Registrar's Empowerment clause as a default option

01:38 Min

In the vast majority of divorce proceedings, parties promptly comply with court orders and it would be inappropriate for the Family Justice Courts or the Syariah Court to, without evidence, presume that one or both parties do not intend to comply, said Minister of State for Social and Family Development Sun Xueling. This is why the court does not impose a Registrar's Empowerment clause as a default option, she added. It is also inconsistent with the intent to secure the best interests of the parties and their children. Instead, a therapeutic justice approach helps couples move forward in a more positive way, rather than positioning them as adversaries in court. Ms Sun highlighted this approach in reply to an MP's questions in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 14).
