Syed Harun Alhabsyi on Israel-Hamas conflict
Singapore has shown both internally and internationally that it has no qualms about proposing and making considered decisions based on what is right rather than what is popular. Its value in the global space has been measured through the trust it engenders in others. Making this point in Parliament on Monday (Nov 6), NMP Syed Harun Alhabsyi urged the Government to build on the trusted partnership Singapore has with both Israelis and Palestinians to arbitrate in the war in Gaza if and when the opportunity arises, publicly or otherwise. He said Singapore also has many scholars familiar with the Middle East, which is a strength it can draw on to get involved in the peace process. Dr Harun also called on the Government to reconsider its position on banning discussion of the conflict at Speakers’ Corner or as part of events and public assemblies. He said the issue offers “depth and richness of knowledge” for national education and learning, and people should be able to discuss and express their thoughts in a safe space to raise awareness as a whole. He said this could be allowed with security restrictions or limits on the number of participants.
