Tan See Leng on Manpower for Strategic Economic Priorities (M-SEP) scheme

40:21 Min

The new Manpower for Strategic Economic Priorities (M-SEP) scheme is designed to be highly selective, with only about 1,000 companies meeting the qualifying criteria. This represents less than one per cent of all registered business entities in Singapore. The scheme allows firms that move the needle in driving Singapore’s growth to temporarily hire more S Pass and work permit holders than allowed under industry quotas. These companies must participate in programmes or activities in line with stipulated key economic priorities and further “micro-managing” their deployment of workers is neither necessary nor helpful. Second Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng said all this when he addressed questions on M-SEP in Parliament on Monday (Jan 9). He said another condition of the scheme is that firms must also hire or train local workers to meet their longer-term needs. In these ways, M-SEP is meant to work in tandem with Government programmes that support Singapore’s economic priorities and ensure that Singaporeans benefit from the country’s growth.
