Thai school shooting suspect learnt how to operate firearm via social media: Police

Thai police report that a teenage suspect in a recent school shooting had consumed violent online content and used social media to learn about firearms. The attack - the deadliest mass killing since 2022, left nine dead including the gunman, with a 12-year-old student becoming the latest fatality after succumbing to injuries in hospital. Over 20 others were injured. Authorities believe the suspect developed an interest in firearms one to two years prior and had previously brought an air gun to school. Investigators are exploring reports of bullying and stress as possible motives. The suspect's parents were questioned, with the father apologizing for his son's actions. Mourners laid flowers at the school entrance as classes were suspended until Friday. The Education Ministry has promised new safety protocols. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has said he will propose stricter gun laws and only allow on-duty government officials to carry firearms. But it remains unclear if civilian gun ownership requirements will be tightened as well.
