The decision to relocate Paya Lebar Air Base was carefully considered, taking into account Singapore’s competing needs as well as then-emerging and now-evolving threats. Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing said this in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 14). He was answering an MP’s questions on the move in light of recent global conflicts, and whether consolidation of the air force’s assets significantly increases vulnerability and operational risks in a first-strike scenario.
