Jeffrey Siow on Land Transport and Related Matters Bill
The new on-board unit (OBU) has been installed in more than 90 per cent of vehicles. The Land Transport Authority will issue a final reminder to vehicle owners who have not done so and give them another three months to install their OBUs at no cost. After that, OBU installation fees will apply. Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow urged them to install their OBUs as soon as possible, as he outlined the provisions in the bill to support Singapore’s transition to ERP 2.0 and harmonise penalties across its regulatory system. He told the House on Tuesday (Feb 3) that the ERP 2.0 system will be completely rolled out from 1 January 2027 and the OBU will be mandatory for all Singapore-registered vehicles. Foreign-registered private vehicles should install OBUs for usage-based charging, while vehicles without OBUs can pay a daily flat fee. Malaysian taxis will be required to install the OBU as this is necessary for tracking and enforcement within Singapore, said Mr Siow.
