Budget 2026 debate: Valerie Lee on supporting the sandwich generation and securing a sustainable future

11:24 Min

In parliament on Tuesday (Feb 24), MP Valerie Lee noted that Singapore’s budget surplus must be deployed deliberately to improve the lives of people today and to fortify the nation against the uncertainties of tomorrow. This includes providing support for the sandwich generation. She suggested stepping up support for smaller families, especially for the middle-income who do not qualify for the highest years of assistance, and also towards eldercare. On sustainability, she also stressed that the government must not leave long-term energy security to the whims of market forces and ensure that power imports are sustainable, reliable and dependable.
