There are three areas where enhancements could be considered in the evolving scam landscape. The first is in real-time cross-platform alerts when suspicious behaviour is detected, without waiting for a formal order. This could mirror fraud detection in financial institutions and could stop scams within minutes. The second area is in pre-emptive restrictions for high-risk accounts which do not yet meet the threshold for disabling. A tiered system of preventive action, such as temporary limits or mandatory identity re-verification, could prevent losses while investigation continues. Thirdly, have mandatory rapid response protocols for platforms. Requiring them to act within a defined number of hours of notification of scam content could significantly reduce the exposure time for victims. MP Jessica Tan proposed these measures in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8) and urged government agencies to continue to work closely with industry players for faster detection, quicker escalation and rapid takedowns.
